Artist Statement
Working in semi-abstract acrylics and impressionistic pastels, my work explores the emotional experience of nature - the quiet sense of openness, calm, and renewal we carry with us long after leaving the landscape.
My acrylic Mountain Dreams series uses layered texture, movement, and luminous colour to express mountains as emotional spaces rather than literal places. These works are inspired by the freedom and perspective mountains offer - environments where the mind can settle and the spirit can breathe.
My pastel landscapes are more impressionistic, shaped by light, water, and atmosphere. Often rooted in Ontario landscapes and memories of time spent outdoors, they emphasize feeling over detail, allowing viewers to bring their own experiences into the work.
Across both mediums, I intentionally leave space by avoiding figures and fixed narratives. The paintings invite personal reflection and offer a quieter visual experience - one that encourages slowing down, breathing, and reconnecting with nature.
I believe quiet beauty has lasting value. My work is created as a place of refuge, offering grounding and ease within the spaces it inhabits.
Biography
Grace Croughan is a Canadian artist born in Okinawa, Japan. During her childhood, her family moved between Japan, the United States, and Canada, finally settling in Toronto, Ontario. Growing up amid frequent moves, she turned to art early on as a way to cope with change and to anchor herself in unfamiliar places.
Grace studied Graphic Design at Andrews University in Michigan and Advertising Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She spent a decade working as an Art Director in the advertising industry before stepping away to raise her two children.
In time, her passion for fine art re-emerged, leading her to pursue pastels and later acrylics as her primary mediums. Today, she works in both impressionistic pastel landscapes and semi-abstract acrylic paintings, drawing inspiration from the natural world and from personal experiences of place, memory, and atmosphere. Her signature acrylic Mountain Dreams series is known for its layered textures and expressive use of colour.
Grace is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, an elected member of the Colour & Form Society, a signature member of Pastel Artists Canada with Master Pastelist designation, and an Associate member of the Pastel Society of America.
